Jess's real name is Geneviève Brun.
She was born near Paris, in Versailles, the city of French kings and queens. Here parents were both African.
Her father died when she was just a little girl ; her mother is still alive, and well, in Toulouse, "la Ville Rouge".
Too much different from her schoolmates, Jess often ran away from school, preferring the company of animals, spending most of her time with many dogs (she even possessed a panther, which is almost impossible in France !)
To earn her living, she went to Paris, selling clothes in a shop. Here she was discovered (or "she captured the attention of") leader of well-known French group KASSAV', who was at that time searching for dancers. With the months passing, JESS became backing singer of KASSAV', and finally had her first album LP, "MA VIE A MOI", produced by KASSAV' under her new name of "JESS LEE". This first successful attempt was followed by a brillant single, "KALIMBE DEL SOL", produced by the great American Herbie HANCOCK. All this led her to sing all over the world (Germany, Rwanda, Djibouti, Spain, Algeria, etc) Her best souvenir was premiering BOY GEORGE, her most successful appearance behind thousands of people.
But she needed a change ! She kept performing in discotheques, and recorded under the name of GHISLY, mainly cover versions of dancing hits ("La Soca dance", "Maldon", "La Lambada", "La Bambala", etc… backed by the group MACAO). But her most sought-after single is her dance version of "SUGAR SUGAR", the 1968-hit from the Archies. Even herself doesn't have a copy ! That particular detail proves that JESS doesn't live in the past ! Alway walking straight in front of the future !
Her new change is made for French singer Danyel GERARD (remember "BUTTERFLY", Number One hit all over Europe in 1971 ?). JESS became his main backing singer. At that time, France discovered "FM" (until that, French radio was only "AM"). At once, France saw hundreds of new radio stations. Danyel Gérard bought one, and offered to JESS one of the first jobs on radio… for a female DJ.
In February 2000, JESS met French author Daniel LESUEUR at "Le MIDEM" (International meeting of singers and record companies) in Cannes, on the French Riviera. At that time, LESUEUR had already left Paris for a living on "La Côte d'Azur". JESS did the same a few months later. JESS and LESUEUR decided to work together, recording some brillant demos and even publishing, after her success on Télé Monte Carlo, an extremely rare picture-disc promo of her techno version of "BESAME MUCHO".
When not recording or rehearsing, JESS is painting beautiful scenes of Africa, that continent still deeply in her heart.
